Many parents and carers already understand the importance of relationships, connection and felt safety. However, when a child becomes highly aggressive, destroys property, attacks others or places themselves at risk, knowing what to do in the moment can feel much more challenging.

This practical, skills-based workshop focuses entirely on protective responses (TBRI Level 4 corrective responses): how to act when the safety of the child or others is at risk. Through discussion, case examples and scenario-based practice, participants will explore how to:

• respond to property destruction safely and effectively,
• respond to aggression towards other children and towards adults,
• support children who may pose a danger to themselves,
• maintain safety and a healing relationship with the child during periods of high distress,
• manage difficult situations when caring for several children at the same time,
• combine warmth and support with clear boundaries,
• adapt responses to children with anxious-ambivalent, avoidant and disorganised attachment patterns.

Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own experiences and will leave with strategies they can use immediately in everyday family life.
